 According to a June 2016 AngiesList article: If your home was built between 1950 and 1990 (or rewired/updated in the same time frame) and is equipped with a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) circuit breaker panel with Stab-Lok breakers, you run a significant risk of breaker malfunction and a home fire.
Circuit breakers are designed to prevent serious electrical problems (outside power surges, overloads, and shorts). When one of these events occurs, the circuit shuts down, or "trips." However, if there is a defect or the system does not operate properly, it can cause your electrical appliances to be destroyed, or even worse, the risk to a panel fire (and your home) becomes imminent.
An estimated 2,800 fires, each year, directly result from Federal Pacific panel breaker malfunction.
